Mathematics: A Subconscious Language Rather Than a Subject
Mathematics is not just a subject, it’s a language which is subconsciously used by everyone. For the longest time, Math has been perceived as a number game, which does not justify the entire meaning and purpose of this subject. To unlock the maximum potential of this subject, it is important to explore the logic behind introducing this subject. As of today, students need a relevant answer as to why do we need to learn something, and Math in India has been glorified with quick calculations.
Math is a science and like any other science even Math needs to follow a logical approach and this can be introduced only when we see the real application in our daily lives. Giving a mere example of how Math is applied in real life will no longer hold the interests of our eager learners. The approach to Mathematics needs a major shift and students need to experience Math in various real-life applications.
Experiential Mathematics can be considered as a new approach of Mathematics where the focus is on the Subconscious Learning Approach (SLA), which is different than quick calculations and traditional mathematics. It allows teachers to engage with children using games and subconsciously to introduce/ reinforce math concepts. For instance, principles of Algebra are taught by playing cricket with students. Online programs like Cricket-Math, a joint initiative by ACE Sports Edu, and UnMath School focuses on SLA. They use the subconscious mind to correlate concepts among students through Cricket. A subconscious mind will act upon any request or instruction you give it. Any thought that is repeated over and over again will take an imprint within the subconscious mind.
With the current pandemic situation, we have observed that most of the educators are approaching new platforms to engage with students. The primary purpose of online education is driven on the core idea of influencing the learning process wherein the students are engaged and exposed to critical thinking. While we encourage children to excel in Mathematics, we unfortunately never cater to the main idea behind doing math, which is to make a systematic decision based on the given information. Educators engaging with the new digital platforms should consider applying critical thinking and help students understand how math was used to determine/reach this conclusion.
Every situation around us does apply some or the other concept of Math, which needs to be identified. E.g. Watching Television can stir multiple concepts of Mathematics: The time concept (Duration of main content vs duration of Advertisements), to the scheduling of shows and their showtimes, based on the popularity and data analysis the showtime is fixed, important cricket matches are usually scheduled on a Sunday (Example IPL final, World Cup Final), etc.
Only when we allow our learners to experience the use of Math in their daily lives, can we impact their learning in a holistic manner. In real life, we identify the importance of a certain subject when we need to face them in person. Similarly, learning can only be meaningful when it is focused on facets of daily life which can impact and inspire a student.
Imagine a child indulging in the upcoming IPL matches from a Mathematical point of view, which will ensure the next time he solves an Algebraic equation, he knows how a tournament is planned (Giving the current speculation that IPL will help in UAE and not India). The impact of bowling speed can vary from pitch to pitch and how strategies made in the dressing room is always inspired by a Mathematical calculation. Decision Making is one of the most important skill set which is inspired by the application of Mathematics.
The Order of the Playing 11, the bowling line up, the fielding positions, the impact of Toss on a game, and the weather; everything combined can actually fill up an entire curriculum in just one sport.
