Established in 1994, IIHM is the largest chain of premier hospitality and hotel management schools across India. An icon in hospitality education, Dr. Suborno Bose is the Founder and ChiefMentor of IIHM and Chairman of Indismart Group. He is the founder and CEO of the International Hospitality Council (IHC), London.

He is also Chairman of the Education Committee of the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCC&I). He has also served as a Member of the Education/ Tourism/ Hospitality committees of various Chambers of Commerce & Industry including CII, FHRAI, HRAE, and ICC.

With a prolific career span of more than three decades, he has spearheaded hospitality education holistically. Recently, he launched his dream project with IBM on career forecasting with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning bringing the most advanced systems of predicting career choices and guiding aspiring career test takers from 14,000 career options. A run-away success gladly accepted in India and Malaysia this is the biggest education disrupter of recent times.

Global Campus: Creating a Strong Technological Impact

IIHM Global Campus is widespread with premier facilities and best-in-class resources. It is the nerve centre of all international activities organized by IIHM, which includes hosting international events like the World’s Biggest Culinary Competition – Young Chef Olympiad finals, international conferences, talk shows, teaching across borders, seminars, and masterclasses. It also hosts Young Chef India and Young Chef India Junior culinary competitions to instill life skills among students. IIHM is the only hotel school in India attached to a hotel itself to ensure students get maximum practical exposure along with theoretical learning.

IT in Hospitality lies at the core of the Global Campus. Technology is the most important engine or driver of modern hospitality and to envisage that aspect, the Global Campus is totally technology-driven. IIHM has initiated a ‘Global Connect’ program, with MoUs signed with nearly 70 institutes in the world for Study Abroad Program, Faculty Exchange Program, collaboration in research projects, and collaboration for internships. Faculties from these 70 countries under the exchange program fly to India for teaching students about International Cuisines.

Being an institutional member of the (IHC) International Hospitality Council, London, it offers discerning students excellent opportunities. IIHM offers BA in Hospitality Management from the University of West London, Bachelor in Tourism Studies from IGNOU. IIHM students also have the option of completing their final year in the UK, Switzerland, Germany or Canada, after completing and performing well in the first two years in India.

The curriculum includes major subjects like Front Office, Housekeeping, F&B Service, F&B Production, and Entrepreneurship. Students passing out of IIHM have numerous career options like working in hotels and restaurants, Facility Management, Catering, Event Management, Aviation, Cruise Liners, Offshore Rigs, Travel Agencies, and much more.

It also encourages students to start their ventures like bakeries, catering, or food outlets. The institute focuses on key areas like international perspective, industry-based curriculum, real-time practices, analytical thinking, research work, and independent learning. In the final year, students are assigned Research Projects, which help improve their analytical and employability skills.

A Trend-Setter of the Indian Hospitality Industry

IIHM is the first institution in India that has included WSET (Wine and Spirit Education Trust) levels 1, 2, and 3 in the curriculum. The F&B major students take the WSET test to qualify, for further studies in this area. IIHM is the only college in the World to select and send deserving students on a Wine Tour to Italy, France, and Spain for a period of 10 days completely free of cost, where they study about the wines and make wines in the Vineyards, Scotch Tour to Scotland and Culinary Tour to France, to visit various food factories and organic farms learning and researching about sustainable hospitality.

It is the only hospitality institute in India to be approved and funded by the European Union to work in the ERASMUS project, where it undertakes research in different fields of hospitality to reduce food wastage in the industry in the European Union. Students were taken to Sweden on an exchange programme of the Erasmus project.

IIHM is the only hospitality college in India to conduct Caviar Service Practical for students to taste and learn how to serve caviar specially flown from Caviar House & Prunier, London, or from Dubai.

Rookie chef, a culinary competition for the 1st year students is held every year for fresher’s. The finals of the culinary competition are held in Bangkok. International Industrial Training option for students in 2nd year from international destinations that provide the best exposure in Hospitality.Super Chef Competition, another culinary competition for 3rd-year students to put their knowledge and training to the test. The finals are also held in Bangkok. A Fine Dining Service done by final year students is the epitome of food service where they pair a five-course menu with wines and serve to Ambassadors, Vice Presidents, General Managers of five-star hotels.

The International Food Festivals held at every campus bring World Cuisines to the plate, which are completely organized and conducted by the students providing them a learning experience.

One major factor that sets IIHM apart from all other culinary and hospitality institutions is the Young Chef India and Young Chef India Junior culinary competitions held among school students to instill essential life skills in them.

The IIHM International College of Distinguished Fellows was inaugurated on 9th July with 8EX Hospitality E- Conclave, followed by a special virtual convocation ceremony held on 10th July 2021, where Dr Suborno Bose, Prof David Foskett MBE and Mr. Ron Scott, came together to confer the Fellowship on to the 150 selected Hospitality professionals.

Initiatives to Inspire Young India

IIHM has pledged support to the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)and has adopted SDG Goal two of ZERO Hunger where students who become ‘Food Soldiers’ have reached out to as many people as possible, through the Food Aid initiative.

IIHM has an entrepreneurship cell called ‘SAHAS’ for helping students start their own businesses with profound Global Advisory Board and kept 25 crores aside to assist students.

IIHM became the first institute of Hospitality in India or possibly the world to successfully organize a Hackathon in January 2021 to initiate, promote, and foster incubation of business ideas amongst hospitality students.

A Day to Cherish, Promote, and Educate about Hospitality

Dr. Suborno Bose was instrumental in earmarking ‘International Hospitality Day’ celebrated every year on 24th April in association with The International Hospitality Council (IHC), London. Hospitality professionals across the world celebrate this day every year with felicitations and discussions on the growth, achievements, and changes of the hospitality industry.

From 2017 onwards, the International Hospitality Council also introduced the “HALL OF FAME” award, where extraordinary leaders like Mr. Ratan Tata, Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons (2017), Padmashree Chef SanjeevKapoor (2019), and Chef Raymond Blanc (2020) are honored with this title for their outstanding work and performance in the industry.

Also, the Global celebration is marked by the presentation of Lifetime Achievement Awards to several leaders from the Hospitality industry. Despite the pandemic situation in 2021, the day was celebrated with enthusiasm online with 50 different countries from different time zones tuned in.

Excerpts from the Pandemic-Driven Life

IIHM has excelled with its online classes. Despite the COVID-19 crisis, it has kept its students abreast of their studies and trending topics, and technological advancements through e-learning. As industries are reshaped by new technologies such as data science, cloud computing, security, blockchain, and artificial intelligence, the number of jobs being created is far outpacing the number of qualified applicants. Academia and industry, working together, can address the skills gap in many of today’s markets.

IIHM in partnership with IBM and eHotelier Academy empowers students and faculty for technology development and is looking to organize more exposure programmes in the future.
